3D X-Ray Technology
- Accurate 3D Mapping for Better Treatments
3D X-Ray Technology
At Love To Smile, we have a tradition of incorporating revolutionary new technology to improve the treatment we provide and enhance the experience of our patients. In keeping with this progressive philosophy, we are extremely excited to introduce the Orthophos XG3D cone beam system from Sirona Dental.
The cone beam system allows us to capture clear, detailed, three-dimensional images that improve our patient education process and make complex dental procedures, like dental implants, more predictable. With this new technology we are able to achieve ideal outcomes while making procedures easier and safer for our patients.
What Is 3D X-Ray Technology And What Does It Do?
3D x-ray technology is a vital part of dentistry. It allows us to capture 3D images of the mouth and skull. Unlike traditional x-rays that only provide 2D images of the mouth, 3D x-ray technology is less intrusive to patients, produces multiple images in less time, and allows your dentist to get a better perspective of your mouth and skull. The images provided by this technology are often used in diagnosis and treatment planning.
How Does XG3D Work?
The Orthophos XG3D system uses a rotating scanner to collect a three-dimensional mapping of the teeth and jaw. It can be used with patients of many different needs, and the entire scan takes only 14 seconds to complete. What’s more, because it relies on digital imaging, the XG3D system emits markedly less radiation than a traditional X-ray machine, ensuring the safety of all our patients.
Dr. Patel and Dr. Pedersen will analyze your scan and discuss with you the findings. The images can be viewed and manipulated on a large screen to help you understand your health and possible treatment options, as the diagnostic capabilities far exceed that of 2D imaging. The images can be enlarged, rotated, and highlighted as necessary. With the help of XG3D and other technology, you can leave our dental office with a clear understanding of your health and potential ways we can help you.

Why Do We Use 3D X-Ray Technology?
There are many different advantages that come with utilizing 3D x-ray technology for our patients. Some of them are:
- Shorter Scan Times
- Scans made by 3D x-ray technology take less time. A complete and accurate scan can be completed in just one rotation. This is possible because the scanner follows the natural movement of the patient, allowing fewer chances of image defects.
- Beam Limitation
- 3D x-ray technology limits the needed radiation to carry out the scan to only the area of interest. This means that the x-ray can be controlled and limited to your mouth or other areas of interest. The limitation provided by 3D x-ray technology makes it a better option for treating patients than 2D x-ray.
- Better Details
- 3D x-ray technology provides immense details in each scan. Just one scan can expose infections, muscles, pathology, and other factors of interest. The details of the results obtained from a 3D x-ray can help doctors plan for implants, extractions, and even sinus treatment, if the cause is a dental issue.
- Bone Quality Assessment
- If you would like an implant placement done for you, undergoing a 3D x-ray scan will prove very beneficial. It will help us establish whether or not there’s sufficient bone to accommodate the implants, whether there are breaks and lesions, as well as the sizes of these elements.
- Lower Cost
- Our 3D x-ray technology is less expensive thanks to the fact that we have it in-office. You won’t need to visit third-party institutions to get your scan done. Also, you won’t need to experience long waiting times to schedule an appointment then wait again for days to get your results. Simply visit us at Love To Smile and we’ll get your scan and results done easily.
- Minimal Exposure To Radiation
- 3D x-ray technology limits radiation. For most patients, prolonged radiation exposure can be detrimental to their health. With 3D x-ray, you’ll be done in less time, thereby minimizing your exposure to radiation.
Is 3D X-Ray Technology Safe?
Some people have concerns about getting exposed to radiation during their x-rays. Compared to traditional x-rays, the radiation emitted by 3D x-ray technology is incredibly small. In fact, it’s so small that the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has approved it as being safe even for children. However, we understand that you may have some doubts. Talk to us during your next appointment and we’ll be more than happy to discuss your concerns.
X-Ray Technology And Dental Implants
If you are a candidate for dental implants, Dr. Patel and Dr. Pedersen can actually pre-plan your surgery using our Galaxis software, ensuring ideal placement using a highly precise surgical guide. The XG3D system allows us to incorporate detailed data, so your new tooth can be designed before the implant is even placed! This helps create a predictable guided surgery, whether in our office or with the help of one of our great specialists. Because the planning takes place virtually, and well before the surgery, your procedure can be simplified and your recovery minimized greatly.
The XG3D is one more way that we at Love To Smile Dentistry can make a complex procedure understandable and predictable. As a result, our patients can look forward to more reliable care, fewer complications, and more confidence in the results. From complex procedures, to general and family dentistry, we’re here to ensure that you will love your smile!
